PASTOR GLEN'S BLOG
October 17, 2018

This past few days, I have rejoiced in watching Pastor Andrew Brunson share on various news programs about his imprisonment in Turkey.  As he reflected on his experience, he shared how he had begun to lose hope; but after hearing from his wife of how people were praying for him, he began to see how God was involved in his suffering.  As I thought about what he shared, along with his wife Norine, I realized that this was a man who understood the benefits of abiding in Christ.

As we read in John 15:4, “Abide in me, and I in you.  As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.  As Andrew Brunson abided in the Lord, there were benefits to his abiding . . . remaining in the Lord!  I want to suggest four benefits for you and me:

First, abiding helps us to sense the leading of the Lord…we recognize his voice.  We are familiar with his ways.  We can do so much more for him because we are familiar with his way.  Andrew began to see God was involved, even in his imprisonment and suffering.

Second, abiding helps us to tap into all of God’s spiritual riches . . . like a branch and vine.  The early disciples knew this principle and it was evident as they healed and preached.  In Acts 4:13 Luke records, “When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.”  When we are abiding in Christ, people can tell that we have been with Jesus – by our actions and words?  There was no doubt, even as Andrew was being prosecuted for terrorism and being a spy who attempted to overthrow the Turkish government, that he had been with Jesus.  He even told his captors that he forgave them!

Third, abiding gives us the “rest” we need to bear a much greater yield.  When we spend intimate time with Jesus we are strengthened and refreshed to do his work.  Pastor Brunson vowed to continue preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ!!

Fourth, abiding carries with it a promise of answered prayer.  In verses 7-8 we read: “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.  My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.”  When we are abiding in Christ, deeply connected to him, we begin to pray his will.  We allow his priorities, his passions, and his purposes to motivate us.

May we each see the incredible benefits of abiding in Christ, even in the midst of (especially in!) the most challenging moments of our lives, even as Pastor Brunson was able to abide in the midst of what seemed at first a hopeless situation!
