PASTOR GLEN'S BLOG
November 14, 2018
When I counsel a couple about to get married, I generally ask them to read and study several Bible passages together. One of those texts I have them read is Ephesians 5:21-33. Almost without exception, either the “groom-to-be or the bride-to-be” object to the word “submit.” The word only appears in v. 21. It is then implied in the next two paragraphs. So, when we read in v. 22, “Wives, submit to your husbands . . . “that verb “submit,” isn’t actually in the sentence. It is understood from v. 21.
Likewise, when we get to v. 25, the same verb, “submit,” applies from v. 21. In essence, here is what the Bible is saying: Men and women are to line themselves up under their spouses in order to make the marriage work. Each one is to give up his/her rights and look out for the best interests of their spouse. Frankly, when we do this, marriage will work well. Line yourself up on top of or refuse to give up your rights, and the marriage will not work well.
Why? Because giving up our rights is an essential part of meeting each other’s needs. Mutual submission is one of the keys to a great marriage.
This weekend, Kim and I will be attending a “Weekend to Remember” event sponsored by FamilyLife Today. We have been planning for this event since last February. Therefore, Larry Roberts will be preaching in my absence once again. Thank you so much, Larry!! Kim and I covet your prayers as we embark on this adventure to strengthen our marriage. And, I know Larry would appreciate your prayers as he proclaims God’s Word this Sunday! May God strengthen us all, as we seek His face in all of our lives!
